LOOKING FORWARD
The last quarter of the year should be full of fun. We have friends
coming to visit us next weekend, others coming into Nairobi at the end of
August and I have a ladies’ getaway weekend to enjoy in late September.
We are so blessed to have these to cheer us up in the middle of
hard work. November will bring us a fabulous group of volunteers from our
home state of Texas, along with Sam and Travis visiting for the holidays. It
promises to be an exciting time.
The two Samburu men who are working to start new churches also have a
plan to start preschools at the same locations. Elders are agreeing to the
plan for several reasons. They are unhappy with the disobedience and lack of
respect they see in the current generation of youth. They want to begin
teaching children to follow God at an early age. The existing preschools are
too far for the young children and it is a good avenue for receiving food
aid. I have agreed to help them with some training for the nursery teachers.
We began this past week with just a few. I am challenging them to think
differently about the methods used for three to five year olds. First off,
they must leave the sticks outside the classroom! Secondly, they need to
smile, praise and encourage creative thinking and expression. And third,
they must pare down the subject matter to basics and learn to teach through
play and games. It sounds simple to a western-educated adult, but it is
quite different to what is done here.
