STILL HUNGRY

HUNGER CONTINUES
I would like to be able to say that conditions are improving. It just
isn’t the case. We continue to encounter hunger at almost every turn.
Charlie spent this past Tuesday taking food parcels to some of
the elderly and needy in town. Tuesday is his training day with local
pastors. They had the training of their life. They worked hand in hand with
him, bagging up the food and then going through town and deciding who should
receive it. All of them have been a part of the larger projects. None of
them has ever taken part in this type of thing. It brought them one step
closer to understanding the type of confrontations that Charlie faces on an
almost daily basis. It pushed them into a position where THEY chose who
would receive help and who would not. It put them up front and personally
involved with the poorest and the beggars; the homeless and the helpless.
I pondered the idea that many must think the food is being wasted on
“non-producers”, i.e. those who are no longer contributing to society.
Rather it is being given to those who not only cannot help others, but
cannot help themselves. I wonder if this is viewed by some as a waste of
resources. Where there is no Christian ideal, there are only traditional
beliefs. And it is likely that those beliefs are geared for the preservation
of the clan and the tribe. Kill or be killed, and let the strong survive.
This past week, we have had a few days of rain in and near town. Pray
that it will continue, that it will be widespread and the grass will grow
again and the animals and people will recover from this extended drought.
