If You Were Samburu…

If you were Samburu, what would you do?
What would you wear? Would you go to school? You would live in a house made from mud and some sticks.
Your mama will build it, but there are no bricks! Mama wakes early and then makes the chai. She cooks in a pot on the fire inside.
She adds lots of sugar and milk to the tea, then pours some for you and also for me. Outside the house, the animals wait while brother and Baba open the gate. They pick up their spears and head out for the day. Sometimes they must travel far away
To find water and grass for the goats, cows and sheep that all good Samburu work so hard to keep. You might go to school or you might be a shepherd. (You might have to guard all your goats from a leopard.)
If the rain stays away for a very long time, And the grass doesn’t grow and the cows don’t look fine, Then you’ll pack up your house and move all your stuff, To look for a place where the water's enough. The bed you sleep on is made from the skin Of a cow and the fur sometimes tickles your chin.
If you were Samburu, what would you do? What would you wear? Would these be your shoes? You won’t have a bathroom or toilet inside But the new baby goat could sleep by you all night. There is no McDonalds and no Captain Crunch. But there’s tea for your dinner and breakfast and lunch.
