A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

Kenyan weather, good music, silly sayings.

Weather: It is Sunday afternoon here. The weather is mildly warm with high clouds, and enough breeze to soften the bright sunshine. This is the best of the best. I am sitting just inside the front door (wide open) and all I hear are the sounds I want. The breeze blowing, the birds chirping and IPOD shuffling those tunes. Just now, Russ Lee comes on and I am reminded of good friends who give so much to encourage so many. Thanks, Russ, and all of you like him who speak words of prayer and do acts of kindness to help others on their way. Read more

prayer requests may 21

Posted on May 21, 2008 - Filed Under Prayer Requests

Today we have a couple of prayer requests. The first one is to pray for rain in the area of the forest specifically. These folks only access to water is a hole in the ground which is currently being drained every morning by thirsty elephants. They must wait until the elephants have all had their fill before they can safely approach and by then, there is very little left. People are not getting enough for their daily needs and there is danger in coming near the elephants who are especially ferocious now as they have new babies with the herd. Pray God will send rain in abundance for all and that the people will be safe from the elephants.

Urgently, prayers are needed for 2 small boys who were attached last week by hyenas as they were tending goats late in the afternoon. The boys are brothers, age 4 and 8 and are currently in the Maralal hospital. Yesterday I heard they are thinking of sending them to Kenyatta hospital in Nairobi, which would be a very long trip, but would provide them with much better care. Pray that they will receive the care they need and God will heal them. I’ve heard the 4 year old is seriously hurt as he was attacked on the head. Pray for God’s mercy on these children and their families.

HABARI ZA MARALAL

This month finds us back in our home in Maralal. We spent most of the first week setting up the house again as we had packed up most everything before we left. while we were away, they made several improvements on our place. The flooding we had before we left had damaged some floors. In addition to the new tile, we have a new ceiling in our living room, with bonus insulation, fresh paint and adequate drainage outside. Previously, when it rained on our corrugated metal roof, the pounding was so loud, we had to shout at each other to have a conversation over the racquet and hearing the television was impossible. It is so quiet now when the rain pours, you can hear the bugs hit the window. And the rain stays outside, where it belongs. Praise the Lord and thanks to all of you who give to Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Your generosity provides the money needed to do the work and the personnel to oversee and manage all the logistics involved. Thank you. Read more

Back in Kenya

Posted on April 4, 2008 - Filed Under General News

It seems like a blink ago, we were in the States and now we are definitely in Africa. The traffic of Nairobi, the backward way so many things are done and the slow pace of life are all clear indicators of our new location. It is good to be back and it feels “right”, but of course we always miss our families so far away. We are trusting the Lord will take care of Sam as he faces his first taste of life on his own and pray that he will cling tightly to the Father who is always with us. Joseph wonders if Sam will always be away and says that when Sam comes to visit he should stay in Maralal forever. While riding in the truck today, he observed that “there used to be another boy in this truck.” He misses Sam and is beginning to show real signs of being homesick for Maralal as we wait in Nairobi for our house to be ready. We plan to return on Monday, which is only a few days away, but it has seemed long to Joseph. Read more

Wednesday, March 19, 2008, Daily Nation Headline News:  Historic moment – Road cleared for Raila to become Prime Minister as Kibaki signs bill into law – Move creates grand coalition – MPs seek to heal divided country ( http://www.nationmedia.com/dailynation/nmgindex.asp )

Yes, this is good and welcomed news.  It is definitely the answer to prayer. The road ahead for Kenya will still have many difficult moments and healing will take time.  Thousands are still in displacement camps.  It will take years before their lives are “normal” again.  Keep praying for Kenya and they move toward healing and building a peaceful nation.  Pray especially for the many, many people in Kenya and in neighboring countries who do not claim our Savior’s peace. Drought in Samburu district

Posted on March 18, 2008 - Filed Under Prayer Requests

The link below will take you to an article in the Daily Nation, a leading national Kenyan newspaper. The story talks about the lack of rainfall this year and the all to common problems facing people who live in affected areas. I thought it might help you to have an insight into the culture and lifestyle of the Samburu people. We appreciate your prayers during this time also, as we will be returning in less than 2 weeks. Pray for good “good-byes” with our family, packing stress (less) and for wisdom as we arrive in the middle of what appears to be a difficult season.

March update

Posted on March 12, 2008 - Filed Under Prayer Requests

We are now less than 3 weeks away from returning to Kenya and each day seems to pass so quickly. We are looking forward to being in our home in Maralal, but we will miss our family here. We have had some great times and met some wonderful people during our Stateside Assignment. We have lots of good memories to take back with us and we are grateful for that. During these last weeks we hope to be able to spend lots of time with Travis, have some good chats with Sam on the phone and make a few more memories. Pray for us as we go through the typical goodbye emotions. And remember our parents in prayer, as well. It doesn’t get any easier, just because you’ve done it a couple times already.  Thanks for continuing to pray for Sam and for Travis as they remain here in the States.

While things in Kenya have settled down considerably, there are still hundreds of thousands of people living in camps. We have no idea how long it will take to resolve the long term issues. If you wish to follow the situation, you can read the Kenyan news at www.nationmedia.com
