Praying for Preschools

Posted on March 25, 2011 - Filed Under Prayer Requests

Saturday we will hold another training for the teachers working in the nursery schools started by our Baptist churches. To date, there are about 20 of these schools providing education for 3 to 5 year olds in their local community. All schools are under the guidance of their local Baptist church. Pray for teachers and school committees to be diligent in providing what is needed for these children to flourish

Charlie will hold 2 days of leadership training for pastors and leaders of churches this week beginning on Tuesday. Please pray that God’s word will penetrate the hearts of these men. Pray it will lead them to maturity and obedience in their work and walk with the Lord. Pray for Charlie as he teaches to speak the words that God has for this group.

Shepherd Schools Need Prayer

Posted on March 20, 2011 - Filed Under Prayer Requests

Last week the adult education officer called for a meeting with Charlie and James to discuss shepherd schools and how we can work together to support education and literacy among these young people who have not had the opportunity to attend school. Pray that God’s Word would take root and grow in their hearts and that they would become servants of the Lord.

Evangelism Teams

Posted on March 7, 2011 - Filed Under Prayer Requests

We listened with awe this week as our friend and fellow worker shared what Samburu Baptists are doing to spread the Gospel. He told how each week, teams of women leave their work and walk to neighboring areas to visit people in their homes. They take sugar with them as a gesture of good will. They split up and as they go into each home proclaiming to their hosts that God has blessed them because today good news has come to their home. They ask, “do you know God?”  Read more

Long Overdue Update

Posted on March 1, 2011 - Filed Under Prayer Requests

Below is an excerpt from our recent newsletter:

A great group of student and adult volunteers came in January and gave a gift of tables they had built to 3 of the preschools.  One of our missionary kids, who lives in Nairobi, led the project.  The effort he put into fundraising, planning and organizing were impressive. He coordinated a team of adult and student volunteers. We are very grateful for all of their work.  Volunteers also held training for the teachers covering the new Baptist Preschool curriculum, written and delivered by Sondra Y. You may remember that she has been working with us since she first visited from Alabama last summer.

Samburu evangelists continued their work and started 6 new preaching points. They baptized 44 new believers. We are so encouraged to have so many faithful partners, locally, nationally and internationally. Our Lord is truly building an amazing team to bring the Gospel to this part of Kenya. To God be the glory! We are grateful to be in the middle of it and thankful to share all this with you who have been praying and who continue to pray.

As we look to future plans, sometimes all we can do is watch as God puts one lamp in front of us on the path and instructs us to “walk this way.” We know that years ago He told us He wanted to do something big here. We know that many have labored in prayer and hard work with the same desire.  We know that He gave us a God-sized vision that the Samburu should eventually take the Gospel to their (enemy) neighbors. And we stand amazed as He brings it all to pass.

Samburu go to the Pokot

THE APPOINTED = TIME

Eighty Pokot men and women (a neighboring tribe of the Samburu who are = considered a bitter enemy) heard the Gospel last night and this morning because 7 = Samburu men were obedient to the call of Christ to preach the gospel to every nation, tribe and tongue. As a result these Pokot want to know, “How do we = start a church of our own down here?” Praise be to God!

Above is a blog post from Charlie from October = 9th. What a breakthrough it is for these men to walk five hours down the mountain = Read more

WILLY

Posted on October 1, 2010 - Filed Under General News

After years as an Acteens leader and very involved in Women on Mission, I
found myself in a church with neither. The plea for a Mission Friends
leader kept coming and I did not feel particularly “called” to answer.
However, the plea kept coming and I relented and I became the Missions
Friends leader. What a strange call I thought but at least I would be
teaching missions again and I got excited.

Willie was the youngest of the 3 – 5 year old Mission Friends. Always
tagging along behind his older sister Julia, Willie never had much to say as
Julia always answered for him. “Willy doesn’t like that” or “Guess what Ms
Sara? Willy has on big boy underwear.” But Willie rarely said a word.

Helping Churches Help the Community

HELPING CHURCHES HELP THEIR COMMUNITY
Several of the new churches started last year have built preschools and
are working to provide ‘nursery’ education for their children. I (Sandra)
have been working some with the teachers to provide training. None have ever
had any formal instruction in teaching. They knew I was teaching Joseph at
home, and they asked if I would come and give them some training. As time
went on, it became clear that they needed help not only with methods of
teaching, but also help in developing a standardized curriculum. Just when I
was feeling overwhelmed, a friend in Nairobi called and asked if she could
come for a visit with her family and bring a guest from America. The guest
turns out to be God’s answer of help for the task. A highly qualified
educator, she is returning to Kenya in September to begin researching the
culture. Our end goal is to develop a curriculum which will meet the needs
of these children. Her commitment and her love for the people are an
encouragement. Her desire to come alongside and use her gifts and talents
for God’s glory is a blessing I can’t even begin to describe. And the friend
from Nairobi? Her children are also making plans to return and work with us
on projects of their own. What an awesome God, indeed! As He brings hearts
together for His plans and His purpose, we praise Him and give thanks for
these good gifts.
