Watching in Amazement

WATCHING IN AMAZEMENT
God is breaking down barriers and working to spread salvation to all
segments of Samburu society. Our vision statement, above, expresses the
desire that no one should be denied the opportunity to hear the Gospel of
Jesus. Our Lord is ever faithful and He has reached out to the unseen
warriors, who live outside the circle of mainstream life in this culture.
Typically, when young men are initiated into the age set of Moran, they
begin to live a life apart from family. They spend most of their time
receded into the bush, keeping guard over the valuable livestock.
Fraternization is mainly within their own kind. In the past few weeks,
however, Charlie has held meetings with 4 different groups of Moran. As
these young men hear the message of creation, sin, sacrifice and salvation,
dozens and dozens are saying ‘yes’ to Jesus and committing their lives to
Him. Some have even asked to start their own church. Pray for this movement
of God to continue and for these warriors to grow into the men God would
have them to become. May their time spent in the wilderness of Samburu make
them strong in their faith. Then in the next decade, when they do rejoin
society, there can be a multitude of Godly husbands and leaders.

PRAYER REQUESTS
* Pray for the continued spread of the Gospel among the moran. Pray that
God’s plan will be fulfilled in and through them and that Charlie and his
co-workers will have wisdom and discernment in all their dealings with these
young men.
* Praise God as a peaceful vote took place on August 4th. No violence was
reported in any area of the nation.
* Pray for SY as she comes to work with us in September. Pray that God will
maximize opportunities for learning and building relationships of mutual
trust. Pray for good health, and an outpouring of support as she leaves
family and work responsibilities in the States.
* Pray for our sons living in America. Pray that God would supply all their
needs and that they would have a desire to know Him, serve Him and obey Him
above all else.
God Reaches Warriors

It all started very simply and without any expectations. There was a
small baptism service planned. When the group reached the water hole, there
were several moran (Samburu warriors) bathing. They agreed to leave so that
the baptism could take place as scheduled. Quietly, however, they watched
from the bushes. Afterward, they asked for and received an explanation as to
what was taking place. Then they asked if it were possible for Charlie and
his friends to bring this news to their group. They would organize all the
young warriors in the area to come.
On the appointed day, 60 young men were in attendance. They ranged in
age from about 15 to 25 years. As Charlie held up his Bible, he asked how
many recognized the book. Only three could say what it was. These were also
the only ones from the group who had attended school. The meeting continued
and a synopsis of God’s Word from Creation to Christ was shared. The group
listened intently. They had never heard this message. But the Spirit of God
was working among them. In the end, 22 moran prayed, asking for forgiveness
and expressing faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.
NO TIME TO WAIT: THE TESTIMONY OF A SAMBURU WARRIOR

NO TIME TO WAIT: THE TESTIMONY OF A SAMBURU WARRIOR
After hearing the Gospel of Jesus, a Samburu warrior went to the home of one
of our Samburu leaders. He said, “I’m very sorry that I told my family
‘don’t go to the church. There are bad people there.’ But now I have heard
the truth. Before I didn’t know what I was doing. Since you and your friend
have told me the News of God, I have now come to know Jesus as my Lord and I
have decided to follow him.”
Last Sunday this warrior and his whole family attended church together.

from death to life

A house built for death has now become a beacon of hope eternal. I (Charlie)
visited an old mama today who has been left alone in a house built for the
purpose of her living alone, separated, waiting to die. We brought a home
health care kit to her provided by Baptist Global Response. This kit will
bring this mama a short time of comfort that she has not enjoyed in a long
time, if ever.
She shared that her husband has died and all her children have died. “So
why have I been allowed to live, even though I am sick and have been moved
here to die?” As the Gospel of Jesus was shared with her today she said,
“Now I understand why I am alive. God has kept me so I could hear this news
that God loves me and that this Jesus has come and died for me so I can live
and be with God. I have never heard this news before and I thank God that He
has sent you all to tell this wonderful news.”

PRAYER REQUESTS
* Please continue to pray for pastors and church members of new churches to mature in their faith. Pray for each to use their gifts to strengthen the body of believers. Discernment is needed as other groups and false teachings try to creep in and pervert the True Word.
* Praise the Lord! My mother and her friend arrived safe and sound in Nairobi and we are enjoying a wonderful visit. Pray for their continued good health, safety and enjoyment of their time in Africa.

WASIWASI
Sometimes a word just doesn’t translate literally into another language.
The Swahili word above is defined as “doubt, perplexity, disquiet, esp. when
caused by moral want of balance, weakness of character, yielding to
temptation.” (Oxford University Press, Standard Swahili-English Dictionary)
As things went well with many new churches started last year and then
the drought ending in January, we were elated and encouraged. New churches
and leaders now need your prayers to be able to discern between those who
want to help and those who want to bring trouble. Division, bad doctrine and
false teachings can creep in if a shepherd is not diligent and watchful of
his flock and there are always those who want to build on another’s
foundation and pervert the good work that God is doing. We have seen this
before and ask that you assist by being a warrior in prayer for those who
have not yet learned how to fight the battle themselves. Standing firm
against the enemy is critical if these new churches are to survive, thrive
and spread the Good News to other people and places.
Thankful For the Home Care Kit

If you’ve looked at the photos and seen the man wearing the white socks, you can see the happiness on his face that day. After a week or so, we received a report of how something so simple has made a difference. The man, who has a sore on his hip from being bed-ridden, now has this to say: “I thank God very much for providing me with this kit. I didn’t request these things. It has helped me very much because now I don’t feel the pain on my hip from sleeping with no bedding.
Thanks for all those who helped provide the kits from Baptist Global Response.
Delivering Help and Hope

“God loves me very much. My wife has died, my children have died, but I am not dead yet. So, today I have heard the news of the sacrifice that Jesus died for me.”
This man, along with over 60 others suffering the effects of HIV/AIDS, received in home health care kits provided by Baptist Global Response. The kits were distributed by Charlie and members of Samburu Baptist churches. Most of the patients are bed ridden. All are unable to care for themselves and require assistance from family members. As supplies were delivered, instructions were given on how to use the contents. Included are things such as bed sheets, latex gloves, vitamins, soap, nail clippers and others. They were packed in 5 gallon buckets by volunteers in the US.
While church members delivered health care necessities that most of us would not dream of being without, they also took time to share the News of God and to pray. At least three of the patients asked Jesus to be their Savior. All were touched with the love of Christ demonstrated through the hands on ministry of local Baptist believers.
To see how these folks were cared for, please visit the photo album on this page titled, “2010 May Samburu”.

Up in a difficult to reach area, Baptists started 12 new churches last year. Now, a works based denomination has come in and wants to start churches by luring the people with food and money. These fledgling believers need prayer so they will be able to discern and choose substance over stuff. Pray they will desire to know God more fully and continue to want to receive the teaching from His Word. Baptists are known here as being “people of The Book.” Over and over we hear people saying that no one has ever come and brought them the News of God or taught them The Word like we do. Pray that others will not be able to thwart the work that God has begun in the lives of these folks in this remote area. Pray they will stand like others have done and declare, “We will not sell the Word of God for a cup of unga (flour).”
